Bhutan can only be reached by flight. Bhutan's only international airport, Paro International Airport, is located in Paro. It's around 7 kilometres from the city. It provides flights from a number of locations, including Mumbai and Guwahati. Bhutan has direct flights from Kolkata, Bagdogra International Airport, and Delhi.

A direct flight from Nepal to Bhutan is also available. In reality, flying to Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and Kangchenjunga allows you to see four of the world's tallest summits (Mt. Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and Kangchenjunga). From Paro, it takes an hour to get to Thimpu, Bhutan's capital. Paro is located at a height of 7300 feet above sea level and is surrounded by mountains. Because of the proximity to the mountain summits, landing in Paro may be a stunning and unique experience. Yonphulla and Bathpalanthag, on the other hand, have recently ceased operations. Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines are Bhutan's national carriers. Druk Air flies from Paro to Kolkata, Delhi, Dhaka, Kathmandu, and Bangkok on a regular basis.

Indians do not require a visa to visit Bhutan, but they must have a valid Indian passport or a Voter Identity Card, as well as an Entry Permit from the Royal Government of Bhutan's Immigration Office in Phuentsholing. This is on the Indo-Bhutan border, directly across from Jaigaon, West Bengal. This entrance permit, however, may only be used to visit Paro and Thimphu. You must get a special area permission from the Royal Government of Bhutan Immigration Office in Thimphu if you desire to travel other areas.

Travelling to Bhutan by car is a popular way to reach Bhutan especially for those people who love going on road trips. India has three border points - Jaigaon – Phuentsholing Border, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar. Phuentsholing is the more preferred option for those trying to reach Bhutan by road. It is around 170 kms from Bagdogra in West Bengal. It is easily accessible and you can even halt here before you head on towards Bhutan.

You can hire private taxis from various places such as Bagdogra Airport or Siliguri stand and the fares can be between 2000 to 3000 INR. Phuentsholing is on the Bhutan side of the border and once you reach there, the journey to Thimpu can be around 5 to 6 hours. As you pass through various sub-tropical and alpine zones, the ride is rather picturesque. For those who believe that the journey is just as important as the destination, a road trip may be a thrilling way to get to Bhutan.

By bus, you may go to Bhutan from Kolkata. There are direct buses from Kolkata's Esplanade Station that will take you to Phuentsholing. However, be aware that the bus travel from Kolkata takes around 18 hours, but just 4 hours from Siliguri. The journey is pretty pleasant because the buses are well-maintained and operated by the Royal Bhutanese Government.

Bhutan is not accessible by train, although travellers can go to nearby stations such as Siliguri, Hasimara, and New Alipurduar and then take a cab or bus to Bhutan. Phuentsholing is about 17 kilometres distant from Hasimara.
