How to reach Darjeeling

How to reach Darjeeling by Air

Darjeeling is the only town in India that does not have its own airport. Bagdogra, in Siliguri, is the closest airport to Darjeeling. Darjeeling is around two and a half hours away by road from Bagdogra. A flight from Delhi to Kolkata takes two hours and fifty minutes. New Delhi is served daily by Air India, Vistara, Indigo, Air Asia, Spice Jet, and Go Air. From Mumbai, Spice Jet and Go Air offer daily flights to Bagdogra. There are also flights from Guwahati and Kolkata on a regular basis.

If you are travelling from outside India, it is recommended that you fly to one of the country's main cities and then connect to Bagdogra. International flights are available from Bangkok, Paro, and the majority of India's main cities.

How to reach Darjeeling by Railways

Darjeeling's nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri, which connects the city to the rest of the nation. Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, and Kochi are among the cities with trains. There are direct trains from Delhi to New Jalpaiguri that run multiple times a day. The Darjeeling Mail (12 hours) runs nightly at 10:05 PM and is the ideal train to take if you are travelling from Kolkata (Sealdah Station).

The famed 'Toy Train' — Darjeeling Himalayan Railway – links New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling (DHR). This train is incredible, and UNESCO has designated it as a World Heritage Site. If you want to travel the toy train to Darjeeling during the summer, make sure to reserve ahead of time because it is quite busy with Indian tourists. This path is well-known and has been depicted in several literature and films both in India and beyond. From Darjeeling to Ghoom, you may take a 'Joyride' through the famed Batasia Loop. Joyrides last two hours and include a 30-minute stop at Ghoom and a 10-minute halt at Batasia Loop.

On most Saturdays and Sundays, a steam train runs from Siliguri to 'Agony Point' above Tindharia. Inquire at the Siliguri railway station. There is also a daily 'School Train' that departs and arrives in Darjeeling from Kurseong. This is one of the last regular steam trains functioning anywhere in the world, and it is still carried by a steam engine.

How to reach Darjeeling by Road

Bus: From Siliguri to Darjeeling, there is a frequent bus service. They are, however, rather sluggish because to the steep, winding ascent to Darjeeling. Many buses run to Darjeeling from Siliguri's Tenzing Norgay Central Bus Terminus on Hill Cart Road. New Jalpaiguri is 8 kilometres away. Taxi/Shared Jeeps: The nearest town to the mainline train network is Siliguri. From here, there is plenty of transportation to Darjeeling. Taxis and shared jeeps are the most prevalent ways of transportation. Shared jeeps leave from a number of points throughout town on a regular basis. The main bus station is likely to be the cheapest. They are efficient and inexpensive, however they are a little uncomfortable due to the uneven roads.

Pre-paid taxis are available outside the train stations in New Jalpaiguri and Bagdogra. From the booking booth at the taxi stand in front of the station, you may take shared jeeps to Darjeeling. Tourists frequently purchase an extra seat or two for the three-hour ride up to Darjeeling.

When travelling from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling, attempt to get a Taxi/Jeep/Sumo with an overhead carrier that has just come from Darjeeling, since this will be significantly less expensive than hiring a vehicle that is travelling directly from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling.
